Lapland Explorers guides watching the northern lights together on a clear Rovaniemi night

Our story

Three friends from Rovaniemi who came back home.

We’re Erkka, Roni and Jesse. We grew up in Rovaniemi, moved away for work and studies, and after a while we came back to start a northern lights company of our own.

The people behind it

Hei, we're Roni, Erkka and Jesse.

All three of us grew up in Rovaniemi. We only left for a while.

How it started

We were tired of our day jobs.

We started this because we were tired of our day jobs and wanted to build something of our own. Roni and Erkka were living in Helsinki, Jesse was up in Oulu. Jesse had been saying for a while that there was a real business in northern lights hunting in Rovaniemi, and we spent a few months looking into it. Then we were on a holiday in Bangkok, and somewhere along the way we just decided: when we get home, we're starting the company.

“We were in Bangkok when we decided to actually do it.”

Back home

We came home and didn't wait.

A month after we got back, the company was real. Roni and Jesse moved up to Rovaniemi but kept their day jobs for a while, hunting the lights in the evenings and early mornings and then working through the day. The first winter was rough. We did almost the whole 2024 to 2025 season like that.

Going full time

All in.

In February 2025, Roni and Jesse quit their day jobs and we started doing this properly, full time.

Why we do it

We didn't want to run just another bonfire tour where nobody really expects to see the lights.

A lot of our guests have travelled a long way and spent real money to be here, and for some of them seeing the northern lights is a once in a lifetime thing. So if the sky is doing something, we want to be out there chasing it. If the weather is against us, we'll tell you honestly and keep driving to find clear sky.

What we believe

A few things we feel strongly about.

We started this because we thought Rovaniemi deserved better.

Locals should run Lapland's tours

Most of the tour companies in Rovaniemi aren't owned by locals, and that always bothered us. Lapland's nature and traditions belong to the people who grew up here. We didn't want them turned into a product by companies that are only here for the money.

A real chance at the lights

When someone travels this far and pays what they pay, the least we can do is give them a proper shot at the lights and an honest night out. No promises we can't keep, and we keep driving when we have to.

Looking after our guides

We spent a full winter hunting the lights ourselves, so we know how hard it is: the late nights, the cold, the long drives, looking after a car full of guests. We try to hire people from Rovaniemi and pay guides properly, because they're the ones doing the hard part. We haven't always found enough locals, so some of our guides come from elsewhere and they've been great. Either way, we want everyone who works with us treated well and earning a good living.

Our guides

The people reading the road and the sky.

We'd rather hire guides from Rovaniemi when we can, since they know the roads and the area. We haven't always been able to find enough, so some come from further away, and a few of them have turned out to be some of the best we've got. What matters to us is that they're good at it and treated right.
