Jesse – Northern Lights guide at Lapland Explorers Rovaniemi

Jesse

The Aurora Strategist

Founder, lead guide, and the reason the money-back guarantee exists. Jesse built Lapland Explorers on one principle: no one leaves without seeing the Northern Lights. He tracks solar wind and weather models across Scandinavia in real time — and has driven over 400 km in a single night to find clear skies.

Janne – Northern Lights guide at Lapland Explorers Rovaniemi

Janne

The Aurora Voyager

Janne can’t sit still when there are lights to be found — and that’s exactly what you want in a guide. He coordinates with the full team by radio, rallies guests for one more stop on tough nights, and has driven deep into Swedish Lapland to deliver the shot.

Daniel – Northern Lights guide at Lapland Explorers Rovaniemi

Daniel

The Aurora Nomad

Methodical, warm, and one of the team’s strongest photographers. Daniel studies conditions before the hunt, adjusts routes live, and greets every guest by name at pickup. His attention to detail shows in both the experience and the aurora photos guests take home.

Jasmin – Northern Lights guide at Lapland Explorers Rovaniemi

Jasmin

Aurora Sage

Jasmin treats every hunt as a personal commitment. She monitors multiple weather and geomagnetic sources all evening, refuses to call a night until every option is exhausted, and times every photo stop to catch the light at its peak. Focused, reassuring, and quietly fierce.

Aarne – Northern Lights guide at Lapland Explorers Rovaniemi

Aarne

Aurora Backbone

Patience is Aarne’s superpower. Where others rush, he reads the sky, waits for the right moment, and trusts the data. He knows Lapland’s backroads well enough to find dark, open spots that tour buses never reach — and keeps everyone calm at 2 am in the Arctic wilderness.

Witold – Northern Lights guide at Lapland Explorers Rovaniemi

Witold

Aurora Wanderer

Wito keeps the mood light on long drives with aurora science stories and genuine warmth — then jumps out to photograph the sky at 3 am. Guests leave not only with stunning aurora shots but with a real connection to the Arctic landscape and the people who call it home.

Jani – Northern Lights guide at Lapland Explorers Rovaniemi

Jani

Aurora Scout

Jani refuses to stop. He adjusts routes constantly through the night using real-time cloud and aurora data, sometimes making four location changes before finding the perfect spot. Calm driving, sharp navigation, and the rare ability to keep every kind of guest at ease on a long Arctic night.

Aurora Whisperer

Eva has a special feel for the Arctic night, patiently reading the sky, the weather, and the silence in between. With experience, intuition, and knowledge, she guides guests toward the best possible chances of witnessing the northern ligh

The sky above Rovaniemi and all of northern Finland had been very cloudy for days, but our guides decided to go much further allowing us to still enjoy the beautiful northern lights! Very friendly and competent guides, professional photography included and means of transport appropriate to the context. Thank you again! I attach two photos taken by the phone waiting for the photos of the photographer.

The best guide ever! 😎🙌 Jessi really gave it his all 💪 – we were in touch all the time because the weather in Rovaniemi 🇫🇮 just wasn’t on our side 🌧️. But no worries for Jessi! He calmly suggested, “Let’s head to Norway, the chances are much better there!” 🇳🇴 And guess what? About 60 km before the border – BOOM! 💥 There they were – the Northern Lights! 🌌😍 An absolutely unforgettable moment 🤩✨ Thank you, Jessi, for your patience, your great tips, and the amazing photos 📸😅 If I ever come back to Finland, I’ll definitely book only with you!

The tour went really well Our guide Ronnie went all the way to Sweden because the sky was cloudy in Rovaniemi. He stopped several times to show us different spots to see the aurora show. He took professional photos of each of us and sent them a few days later via a link. That's a relief, because they don't turn out well with the phone in automatic or night mode. He also offered us hot drinks and cookies. Recommended

I booked for 28th Sep. Provider texted and informed us that the weather wasn't very good and suggested to change it to next day. I was very glad that I took his advise. The next day Jesse came sharp at promised time. Drove for about 40 minutes and found a spot with good viewing. After took few shot he said we're no longer under pressure but let's go hunt for more. Drove to border of Sweden and found his magical spot. The view was absolutely stunning. Perfect photos. The sky was giving us a magical show. Wrapped up with some home made cookies and warm drinks. Jesse was very professional and patience. He delivered all photos as promised on time. I would strongly recommend this company. Great Job. Keep it up.

I had a fantastic time Aurora Hunting with Lapland Explorers and our guide Janne, Even on a partially cloudy night Janne and the rest of the Lapland team made sure we were in the right spots in the right time hunting for the perfect moment, they went above and beyond chasing for the perfect spot to see the lights which were stunning, driving to well research spots to give us the best chance. I would highly recommend both Janne and the team for their communication between vehicles giving all involved the best possible experience. Thank you

As soon as we got in the bus our enthusiastic guide had a plan to head to Sweden, which surprised us & was great to add another country on our tour list. He used a lot of data to maximise the chances of seeing the northern lights & he nailed it! After an initial Aurora sighting we waited some time & based on new data predicted a big show coming up & wow what a spectacular Aurora we witnessed. We were lucky enough to see a 360 deg, 40 minute spectacle with lights dancing all around us - incredible. I would recommend a tour to maximise your viewing chances.

It was a tour of the highest quality and hospitality! I stayed in Rovaniemi for two nights and was originally scheduled to join the tour on the first day, but the guide sent me a message saying, "It's very cloudy, so I strongly recommend changing it to tomorrow," so I changed it to the second day. They picked us up at the hotel on time and literally "hunted" the aurora, taking us to a place called Pello on the Swedish border. On the way, we saw a lot of similar tour cars stopping and waiting for the aurora to appear, but we felt like we wouldn't be able to see it that way. We had to hunt for it. I think that's why this tour has a money-back guarantee. If you want to be sure to see the aurora, I recommend this tour. After we got to a good spot, we could see the aurora after a while, and the guide took lots of photos with his high-quality camera. When I was satisfied and went back to the car, I was called out again to see an amazing aurora. It was even clearer than before, and they took a lot of pictures. It seems the aurora borealis becomes clearer when the temperature drops, and they were waiting for that to happen. They also sent us back to the hotel. We left at 7:30 pm and got back to the hotel at 3:00 am. Four or five days after the tour, they emailed us the photos they'd taken, and my family was impressed all over again. I'm really grateful to the guide and this tour for giving me a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

Highly recommended! 100/10! Words cannot explain how joyful this tour is. Truly appreciate the effort and teamwork from this small company. Thank you for bringing such incredible experience, especially our tour guide Janne. The day I joined the tour, Janne drove 3-4hours to Sweden for hunting the northern light (and 4hours drive back to Rovaniemi, it’s crazy!). As a tourist, I felt so lucky for choosing this company as they really tried their best to make us successfully enjoyed the natural beauty. We had warm juice and snacks during the trip too! Despite the enjoyment of northern light, the tour guide also shared with us about the cultures of Finland and educated some simple sciences about nature. Absolutely amazing!

We had an incredible experience with Lapland Explorers! Our guide Daniel was not just a guide but also an amazing photographer. He was extremely polite, humble, and took care of every little detail throughout the tour. We were lucky to spot the Aurora Borealis within the first 30 minutes, and Daniel captured stunning photos for us. But he didn’t stop there — he took us to a second location where visibility was a bit low, and then to a third spot where the northern lights were absolutely magical — truly too good to be true! What really stood out was his warm and personal touch. During pickup, Daniel came out of the vehicle to greet everyone personally, and he did the same when dropping us off after the tour. His colleague, who was driving the other vehicle, was also fantastic — both of them shared great insights and made sure everyone was comfortable and informed. The entire Lapland Explorers team is professional, friendly, and genuinely passionate about what they do. 💫 Highly recommended — a must-try experience in Rovaniemi!

The guide was amazing! On our first day, we drove all the way to the Swedish border with Janne (our guide) but unfortunately didn’t get to see the Aurora. Janne was extremely patient — we changed locations multiple times but still had no luck. We were quite sad and disheartened, but the company kindly offered us another chance to go on a second trip at no extra cost, with a promise of a refund if we didn’t see the Aurora again. It turned out to be the best decision! On our second attempt, we finally witnessed the Aurora and captured some stunning photos. Janne was fantastic throughout — constantly checking on us and even offering juice and cookies. Overall, a wonderful experience with a truly professional and caring company. Highly recommended!

The tour was super well organized. The hotel pick-up went great. It was a starry night. Janne sped us 320 km north because the cloud conditions were better forecast for 11:00 pm. We actually wanted to go to Ivalo, but the northern lights appeared before we got there, so we parked next to a small lake by the bridge and enjoyed the spectacle there. We didn't get back to the quarters until around 3:00. The tour was really worth it and Janne was a great guide.

The trip was absolutely amazing our guide Aarne was incredible. Aarne gave us great information on the northern lights and how they work . We travelled 4 hours out of rovaniemi into Sweden , due to cloudy weather. Aarne and the rest of the team took us to some clear skies with good views we waited patiently for the aurora and just as we started loosing hope around 2:20am the sky started dancing.

By far the best experience we had during our stay in Finland!!! Jesse is a real aurora hunter… he drove us during two nights (first night was too cloudy) far in the north, even in Sweden to get the right spot! The result was far beyond our expectations, northern lights explosion just above us, magical!!! Thanks a lot. We wish you the best!!!

Frequently Asked Questions

Got questions? We’ve compiled a list of answers to the most common inquiries about our adventure experiences. If you need more information, don’t hesitate to reach out to us!

When is the best time to see the Northern Lights?

While the Northern Lights season runs from September through March, making any time within this window a good opportunity to see them, the experience ultimately depends on luck and local weather conditions. Autumn often provides clearer skies with less cloud cover, increasing your chances of spotting the aurora.

However, spring (specifically February and March) brings the highest solar activity, which can produce the most intense displays. That said, the strongest Northern Lights can occur in any month during the season if solar storms align with clear skies.

Important Note on Moonlight: The best time to visit is during a New Moon or when the moon is not visible. During a Full Moon or even a Half Moon, the bright moonlight can wash out the sky, making it very difficult to spot the Northern Lights, especially if they are faint. For the best visibility, we highly recommend planning your trip during darker nights when the moon's glow is minimal.

Can we see the northern lights today?

While we cannot predict the future with 100% certainty, historically, our success rate for spotting the Northern Lights is 90–95%. If we are able to locate cloudless skies for a long enough duration, that chance increases to nearly 100% that the aurora will appear at some point during the hunt.

However, please note that we do not control the strength or intensity of the display. On some nights, the lights may be faint, appearing as subtle, cloud-like lines in the sky, while on others they may be vibrant and dancing. Regardless of their intensity, if they are visible, we consider it a successful sighting.

How long do aurora hunt tours last?

Our average tour duration for both Small Group and Group tours is typically 5–8 hours. However, on our Small Group tours, the experience can extend up to 12 hours depending on cloud coverage and how far we need to travel to find clear skies. Driving distances vary significantly by day, ranging from as little as 50 km to as far as 350 km one way.

What should I bring on an aurora hunt?

Good attitude, warm clothes and possibly some food. We offer light snacks and warm drinks on the hunts.

What is Guaranteed Aurora Hunt?

While we cannot control the weather or guarantee that the Northern Lights will appear, we guarantee your satisfaction: if you don't see them, you can choose a full refund or reschedule as many times as needed until you do.

Please note that for your safety and to ensure a worthwhile experience, we typically do not depart if conditions are unrealistic for an aurora display, if driving distances become excessive, or if road conditions are unsafe.
